I’ve found that I really enjoy getting outside on my own to explore the lesser-seen destinations in and around Utah. This passion is enabled by my beloved and understanding wife, along with a truck that allows me to reach the lesser-known trailheads.
I usually research my destinations on the internet, or in books I’ve accumulated from CampSaver and a good hiking companion, Scott Datwyler. Then armed with maps and Gaia GPS on my phone, I give it a try never being totally sure what I’ll find. I’ve recently added some additional safety by taking a two-way satellite communicator in the form of a Garmin InReach Mini. But that’s still no substitute for extra caution when traveling alone.
Not all of my outings are solo — I’ve got a small group of friends who like the unknown and with whom I’ve recently taken up Canyoneering as another form of adventure. I’ll post some of those trips as well.
Hope you enjoy reading about these beautiful areas! #givethanks
